International Health Insurance Renewal Checklist
International health insurance renewal is the point to check the next policy year against your current cover and your household’s needs. Start with the renewal notice and the full terms. Compare the annual premium with what you pay when you use care. Check each family member’s eligibility, then review the countries where you need treatment. If you want to switch insurer, ask for written acceptance of the new cover before you arrange the end of your current policy. Give separate attention to ongoing treatment and any waiting periods. Use the worksheet below to record differences between renewal terms and a replacement quote. Elev8 Insurance is an independent brokerage that can help you request comparable terms and review the replies. A policy review can also address service or claims questions while you consider your next renewal.
When should you start a renewal review?
Start when the renewal notice arrives, or earlier if a move or treatment plan will affect your decision. Read the deadline for accepting changes and the notice required to end the policy. Ask the insurer when it needs a reply. Keep those dates with the policy documents.
Allianz Care asks people who want to switch to contact it before renewal to help prevent a break in cover. Its guidance also directs members to their insurance certificate and benefit documents for the terms that apply. This is a provider example; confirm the process with your own insurer. Read Allianz Care’s switching guidance.
A worksheet for your international health insurance renewal
Use the same questions for the current insurer and each replacement quote. Put the document name and page number beside every answer. Mark an unanswered point as “awaiting written confirmation” so it stays visible during the decision.

| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Policy dates | Current end date and time, proposed start date and time, payment deadline, cancellation notice. |
| Total annual cost | Premium in the same currency and payment schedule; any taxes, fees or instalment charges shown in the quote. |
| Your share of a claim | Deductible, percentage cost share, any cap, and whether each applies per person, per claim or per policy year. |
| Treatment already in progress | The insurer’s answer for each relevant condition, planned procedure and current prescription. |
| Waiting periods | Which benefits have a waiting period, when it ends, and any written credit for time served. |
| Family members | Who is eligible next year, dependant age rules, and the process for adding a child. |
| Countries and hospitals | Residence eligibility, area of cover, home-country treatment and access to the providers you use. |
| Open claims | Who handles each claim, the submission deadline and how to contact the team after the current term ends. |

How to compare a premium increase
Ask for a renewal quote using your current benefits first. Then request a separate quote for each change you want to test, such as a different deductible. This gives you a clear record of the cost attached to each option.
To calculate the premium change, subtract last year’s annual premium from the renewal premium. Divide the difference by last year’s premium, then multiply by 100. For example, a rise from 6,000 to 6,600 in the same currency equals 10%. This fictional example illustrates the calculation.
Check the household total after changes in the people insured. If a child has been added, ask the insurer to separate that cost from the change for the existing members. Keep the benefit limits beside the price when you compare offers.
What needs written confirmation before you switch?
Ask the receiving insurer to explain the underwriting terms, which are the terms it uses to assess medical history. Give it the information requested in the application. Obtain its decision on exclusions and any extra premium before you accept.
Allianz Care’s public switching guidance ties cover for pre-existing conditions to the accepted underwriting terms. It describes different treatment under full medical underwriting, moratorium and non-underwritten policies. Use the insurer’s answer for your application when you complete the worksheet. For treatment already planned, request confirmation of the benefit and any approval needed before care. Ask both insurers who will deal with treatment that crosses the change date. Keep a copy of their replies with the final policy schedule.
Family checks before the next policy year
Review each person separately. Record planned changes of residence and the providers they need to use. Ask about a child who will reach a dependant age limit during the next term.
If maternity or newborn cover matters to your household, request the applicable benefit limit and enrolment deadline. Confirm any waiting period in writing. The expat family health insurance page gives you a wider list of family benefits to compare.
A family with several policies can use one worksheet per policy and a shared calendar of renewal dates. This helps the person managing the household see which decision comes next.
Using a broker or dealing with the insurer directly
You can ask your current insurer to explain its renewal offer. An independent broker can also request options from other insurers and help you compare the written replies. Ask the broker which insurers it can approach and how it is paid.
If you want help with service on an existing policy, ask whether the insurer accepts a new broker appointment. Get confirmation of the appointment process and its effect on the policy. The Elev8 policy-review service is a route to discuss that request.
Employers arranging cover for staff can use the separate group medical implementation and switching checklist.
Renewal questions
Does renewal keep every benefit the same?
Read the renewal offer and any notice of changed terms. Use the worksheet to compare it with the current schedule, including exclusions and benefit limits. Ask the insurer to explain each difference before you accept.
Can I reduce the premium by changing the deductible?
Request a written quote for the deductible you are considering. Compare the premium saving with the extra amount your household would pay when it makes a claim. Check whether the requested change requires underwriting.
What should I send for a first policy-review enquiry?
Give your renewal date and the country where you live. State which insurer you use and the main issue you want to resolve. The adviser can then confirm which documents are needed and how to send them securely.
