Expat Disability Insurance & Life Cover: 7 Checks
Expat disability insurance is intended to pay the benefit stated in the policy when illness or injury meets its definition of disability. The key questions go beyond the monthly amount: which occupation definition applies, how long the waiting or elimination period lasts, how long benefits can continue, which exclusions and medical underwriting terms apply, and whether the insurer can cover your residence, occupation and future countries. Check the payment currency, offsets against employer or public benefits, claim evidence and what happens after a move.
Life insurance is a separate contract triggered by death under its own terms and normally pays the named beneficiary. Do not assume either cover is worldwide or portable because it is described as international. Eligibility, licensing, benefits, exclusions, premiums and continuation rules vary by insurer and jurisdiction. Elev8 acts as an independent insurance broker, not an insurer or government-benefit authority, and can compare only the options available for the submitted brief.
Disability income, life cover and public benefits are different
The Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner defines disability income insurance as insurance that makes periodic payments to replace income lost when an insured person cannot work because of sickness or injury. The actual trigger and payment rules come from the issued policy.
| Protection | Typical purpose | Verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Individual disability income policy | Benefit when the policy definition of disability is met | Occupation definition, waiting period, benefit amount and period, exclusions, offsets and claim evidence |
| Employer disability benefit | Workplace benefit under the employer plan | Eligibility, employee contributions, taxable treatment, termination after employment or relocation, and benefit offsets |
| Life insurance | Death benefit to the named beneficiary under the contract | Term, amount, beneficiary, exclusions, premium pattern, renewal and residence rules |
| Public or social-security benefit | Statutory support under the relevant system | Contribution history, residence, nationality, work status, agreements and payment-abroad rules |
Seven checks for an expat disability policy
| Check | Question for the insurer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Definition of disability | Does the policy assess my own occupation, another suitable occupation or any occupation? | The definition controls when a claim can qualify |
| 2. Waiting period | How long after disability begins before benefits can be payable? | Income must be funded during that period |
| 3. Benefit amount and period | How much can be paid, for how long, and in which currency? | A percentage, cap, currency or maximum period can limit the payment |
| 4. Exclusions and underwriting | What conditions, activities, countries or causes are excluded or specially underwritten? | No excluded circumstance should be assumed covered |
| 5. Other income and offsets | Can employer, public, workers compensation or other benefits reduce the policy payment? | The stated maximum may not equal the final payable amount |
| 6. International eligibility | Can the insurer issue and continue cover for my residence, citizenship, occupation and planned moves? | International branding does not guarantee every country or occupation |
| 7. Claims and renewal | Which medical, financial and occupational evidence is required, and can terms or premiums change? | Usability depends on both the claims process and continuation rules |
“Elimination period” is commonly used for the time before disability benefits become payable. A New York Department of Financial Services explanation illustrates the concept in that jurisdiction; the applicable policy and regulator must be used for every real case.
Life cover, broker support and renewal
Life insurance is a separate decision
Life cover should be calculated from the financial obligations that would remain after death: dependants, income replacement, debts, education, final expenses and existing assets or employer benefits. The NAIC consumer guide recommends reviewing needs, affordability, policy type, renewal and replacement carefully. Do not cancel existing insurance until replacement cover is issued, accepted and effective.
Moving abroad does not automatically remove public benefits
Public and employer benefits depend on the relevant rules. For example, the U.S. Social Security Administration says payments abroad can be affected and provides a screening tool. Within the EU coordination framework, Your Europe explains that coverage depends on work situation and residence. These examples are not universal determinations; check the competent authority and employer plan for the countries involved.
Independent broker support versus one insurer
An independent broker can organise one brief, approach available insurers and compare definitions, benefits, exclusions, underwriting, claims and renewal terms. One insurer can explain its own contract in detail but does not provide a market comparison. Ask which insurers and jurisdictions were considered, what was unavailable, how differences were assessed and what servicing continues after placement.
Claims, family and renewal
Keep the application, disclosures, quotation, policy, endorsements and beneficiary nomination together. Confirm who must be notified, claim deadlines, medical and occupational evidence, proof of earnings, payment currency and appeal route. Review cover after a move, job change, income change, marriage, divorce, birth, beneficiary change or renewal notice.

Frequently asked questions
Expat disability insurance and life cover
Can any expat buy international disability insurance?
No. Eligibility depends on the insurer’s licensing, permitted countries, residence, citizenship, age, occupation, income, medical underwriting and other rules. Obtain written confirmation for the actual applicant and jurisdiction.
Will expat disability insurance continue if I move country?
Not automatically. Some contracts may continue after certain moves, while others require notice, restrict countries or cannot be renewed. Check the change-of-residence clause and obtain written confirmation before relocating.
What does 'unable to work' mean in a disability policy?
It means the definition written in the policy—not simply being absent from work. The contract may assess your own occupation, another suitable occupation or any occupation and can include partial, residual or total-disability rules.
Is disability insurance the same as life insurance?
No. Disability insurance can pay the insured person when a qualifying disability occurs; life insurance pays the named beneficiary after the insured person’s death under the contract. Triggers, beneficiaries, benefits and exclusions are different.
When should an expat apply for disability or life cover?
Apply while the need and destination are known, allowing time for underwriting and evidence. Approval is not guaranteed. Keep existing cover until any replacement is issued, accepted and effective, then review both contracts before cancelling anything.
